Beyond All Reason (commonly abbreviated BAR) is a free, open-source real-time strategy game built on the Recoil Engine. It carries forward the large-scale, physically-simulated combat style of the original Total Annihilation and Spring RTS lineage: full unit and projectile simulation, deformable terrain, and battles that can scale from small skirmishes to hundreds of units per side.
The game is under active, community-driven development and is free to download for Windows and Linux.
Factions
BAR currently has two complete factions, with a third in development:
- Armada — one of the two core playable factions.
- Cortex — the other core playable faction.
- Legion — a newer faction, still a work in progress.
(See Armada and Cortex for faction-specific pages as they're written.)
Gameplay
- Terrain affects tactics directly — for example, radar cannot see through mountains, so terrain shapes scouting and ambush play.
- Unit rosters span many classes: bots, vehicles, aircraft, ships, hovercraft, factories, and static defenses, including experimental/late-game units.
- The economy is built around balancing resource production against unit output, the same metal/energy foundation as the Spring RTS lineage this wiki already documents (see Spring RTS).
- Powerful late-game weapons (including nuclear weapons) can physically alter the terrain.
Getting started
- The game is downloaded and played through BAR's own launcher/client from the official site.
- Matches, replays, and leaderboards are tracked centrally, and the game includes in-client guides and a command reference.
- The community is active on Discord, and the project is open-source on GitHub.
